Sushant Singh Rajput, Bollywood Star, Dies at 34

Mr. Rajput, best known for his roles in the films “Kai Po Che” and “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” got his start on television in 2008.

The news of Mr. Rajput’s death sent shock waves through India’s film industry and through a country that has continued to battle a rising number of coronavirus cases even as it emerged from a monthslong lockdown. Several prominent leaders and actors took to social media to offer their condolences.

The death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput on Sunday has sparked fresh discussions about mental health.

The 34-year-old actor was found dead in his Mumbai home, in what police said appeared to be a case of suicide.
The news was met with an outpouring of grief by fans and other Bollywood stars with the conversation soon turning to mental health and depression.
Actress Deepika Padukone, who has talked openly of battling depression, said it was important to reach out."Talk. Communicate. Express. Seek help," she wrote on her Instagram account. "Remember, you are not alone. We are in this together. And most importantly, there is hope."

Mr. Rajput was comfortable both in hero and character roles, and he was known for being relatable on and off screen. In 2016, he starred in “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” about the rise of the Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It was one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2016, and Mr. Rajput was again praised for his performance, netting several award nominations and one win.
